Sexual agency refers to the ability to make autonomous decisions about your sexuality: with whom, how, when, and what to do. It isn't a complicated concept, but the conditions that make it possible in reality are more complex than they seem.

What obstructs agency

Sexual agency is hindered by external pressures (partner expectations, cultural norms, fear of judgment) and internal obstacles (shame, lack of information, difficulty communicating your desires).

The lack of comprehensive sex education is one of the most practical obstacles: if you don't know that a certain practice exists, or that other people share it, you can't consider it as an option. You can't choose what you don't know.

Agency and consent

Agency is the precondition of consent reality. Consent given under pressure, for fear of disappointing a partner, or in the absence of perceived alternatives, is not full consent. That's why it consent culture doesn't only concern the words used, but the conditions that make it possible to say no without consequences.

Agency in relationships and digital content

On live cam platforms and in adult content, agency is explicitly present on both sides. Performers can refuse requests, choose what to show, decide who to work with. Users can choose what to search for, change performers, decide when to leave a session.

This level of explicit control is rarely present in other sexual contexts. It doesn't make adult platforms ideal, but it makes the structure of choices more transparent than it often is in real life.
