Consent culture indicates a cultural shift in which explicit consent becomes the norm in sexual interactions, not the exception. It’s not a recent ideology: it’s the formalization of something many BDSM communities have practiced for decades.

What Changes with Explicit Consent

The traditional implicit model—where sex “happens” through ambiguous signals and subjective interpretations—produces situations where people end up in experiences they didn’t want without there having been an explicit refusal. Consent culture replaces this model with direct communication: you ask, you answer, you can change your mind.

In the practice of BDSM, this has been standard long before the term “consent culture” existed. Advance negotiation, safewords, check-ins during the scene: these are tools BDSM practitioners developed precisely because their practices make consent non-optional.

The Criticisms

Criticisms of consent culture come from opposite directions. On the one hand, those who see it as excessive proceduralization that kills spontaneity. On the other, those who see it as insufficient because consent can be given under social or psychological pressure.

Both criticisms have a point. Explicit verbal consent doesn’t solve every problem of power, and spontaneity has its value. But as a minimum starting point, asking is almost always better than not asking.
