Cultural fetishization is the process by which traits tied to a person’s ethnic or cultural origin are isolated, idealized, or sexualized in a way that reduces that person to a representation of their culture rather than an individual.

How it works in practice

Cultural fetishization isn’t necessarily aggressive or conscious. It often shows up as genuine attraction, but distorted by cultural expectations: the idea that Asian women are docile, that Latina women are passionate, that Black women are sexually aggressive. These stereotypes have a history, and when they become the main filter through which a person is seen, the result is a form of reduction.

The difference between ethnic preference and fetishization isn’t in the attraction itself, but in what you see in the other person. An attraction that starts from specific physical characteristics is different from an attraction to a stereotyped projection.

The context of the adult industry

In the adult content industry, cultural fetishization is an explicit commercial mechanism: ethnic categories sell because they amplify certain stereotypes that the industry itself helped construct. Many performers are aware of this and have clear positions on how to handle this aspect of their work.

Awareness doesn’t mean abstaining, but it helps you look at content more honestly about what you’re consuming and why.
