On December 9, 2024, Human Rights Watch published a report titled \u201cI Learned How to Say No\u201d, dedicated to labor abuses and sexual exploitation in Colombian webcam studios.<\/p>\n

The webcam interaction<\/a> is now a billion-dollar industry, and precisely this scale makes the power dynamics that were once locked behind a studio door more visible.<\/p>\n

The report arrives at a time when the webcam economy is worth billions, and Colombia is one of the main production hubs.<\/p>\n

The models are not marginal figures: they are the engine of revenue, but control remains elsewhere.<\/p>\n

It's nothing new, but it's still striking to see it confirmed.<\/p>\n

2024 delivered a document that is difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n

What emerged from the 2024 report<\/h2>\n

Human Rights Watch collected interviews with models describing pressure to perform non-consensual sex acts, imposed schedules, and commissions withheld by the studios.<\/p>\n

This is not gossip fodder: the report also documents the facilitation of child sexual abuse material by some studios, as reported by ICIJ.<\/p>\n

ICIJ picked up the story with a blunt headline: models suffer at the hands of Colombian studios.<\/p>\n

The title chosen by HRW is already a weighty phrase: learning to say no is a right, not a luxury.<\/p>\n

Anyone who has followed the industry for years knows it well: the growth of the webcam economy has not automatically brought more rights.<\/p>\n

The problem is not limited to Colombia. The structure of local studios is similar in other countries with low costs and high connectivity.<\/p>\n

Global platforms profit from the difference between what they pay and what they take in.<\/p>\n

BongaCams' statement does not address the substance of the accusations against the studios. It talks about dashboards, not blackmail.<\/p>\n

The panel can show how much you earn, not whether you were forced to do something.<\/p>\n

A contract signed without understanding the clauses is not consent. It's a procedure.<\/p>\n

Studios often withhold documents and explain little.<\/p>\n

Declared transparency never makes it to the room.<\/p>\n

Seeing them doesn't mean controlling them.<\/p>\n

Privacy and digital rights after the new laws<\/h2>\n

Digital privacy laws have pushed platforms to revise encryption and transparency policies.<\/p>\n

A recent analysis notes how cam sites are adopting stronger controls for users and performers, along with more transparent data management.<\/p>\n

The European regulation and similar laws have forced platforms to review their data flows.<\/p>\n

For a performer, portability and deletion are tools of defense, not bureaucratic details.<\/p>\n

The issue goes beyond technical matters.<\/p>\n

The new rules require platforms to ensure that a model can delete her data and take it elsewhere.<\/p>\n

In the studio, however, data control often remains in the hands of whoever manages the cameras and payments.<\/p>\n
