It’s a process, a practice you learn, exercise, and weave into the way you are with others. It’s not new, but it still makes an impression to hear it said clearly by a public school institution.

The conference title, “Our purpose is to promote student success through inclusion, innovation and empowerment,” says a lot. Why talk about student success and consent in the same sentence? Because without the ability to ask for, receive, and give consent, no healthy relationship holds. And without healthy relationships, personal and collective success remains incomplete.

Anyone who’s worked in sex education for years knows this well: consent is the real blind spot in our culture. It’s taken for granted, reduced to a verbal “yes” or “no,” confused with the absence of resistance. And yet it’s far more complex.

What Consent Culture Really Is

The consent culture It isn’t a manual of sexual etiquette. It’s a system of values that runs through every area of life: from the way we ask for a hug to how we negotiate boundaries in a BDSM relationship, all the way to power dynamics at work or in the family.

The term entered public debate largely thanks to feminist movements and American campus campaigns. The Oberlin Review, for example, published a piece titled “Consent: Our Role in the Interruption of Rape Culture” that explains how consent is not just individual protection but a collective tool for interrupting patterns of normalized violence. The question they pose is radical: what can we do, as a community, to make consent an automatic reflex rather than an exception?

It’s not a rhetorical question. Data on sexual violence shows that most incidents happen in relational contexts, not between strangers. And in those contexts, consent is often assumed, not asked for. Consent culture tries to reverse that habit.

The PDF “Creating a Culture of Consent” published by Jackson College (JCCMI) explains it directly: “We all play a role in creating a healthy, supportive community.” Each of us has a role. It’s not only the responsibility of the person who experiences violence or the person who commits it, but of everyone present. They call it “bystander intervention,” but it’s simpler than it sounds.

How to Practice It, Not Just Theorize It

The hard part comes when you move from theory to practice. Because explicitly asking for consent, in a culture that experiences it as embarrassing or “unromantic,” requires courage and training. And it also requires the ability to accept a “no” without feeling rejected as a person.

The practices of consent dynamics in the BDSM world offer an interesting model. There, consent isn’t an assumption; it’s a negotiated agreement, often put in writing, always revisable. It’s called “enthusiastic consent” and means every participant has the right to withdraw at any time, without having to provide explanations. It sounds rigid, but it works. Because it removes ambiguity.

The Peel Board conference worked on exactly this: how to bring that model out of the bedroom and into classrooms, workplaces, and everyday relationships. It’s not easy. But it’s the only way to interrupt what they call “rape culture”: a culture that normalizes violence, minimizes boundaries, and blames those who set them.

You don’t need to be in a BDSM relationship to apply these principles. In fact, most people who practice BDSM know that consent is the basis of everything. Those who ignore it aren’t doing kink, they’re abusing.

Safety and Consent: Beyond the Form

One of the most common objections to consent culture is that it “kills spontaneity.” As if asking “may I?” were less exciting than just taking. It’s an argument that only holds if you’ve never experienced the liberation of an explicitly desired yes.

Consent isn’t a legal contract, even though in many contexts it’s reduced to that. It’s a continuous process that includes reading nonverbal signals, periodic checking in, and the ability to stop when the other person shows discomfort. It’s what in games of power exchange is called a “check-in” and should be normal in every sexual encounter.

The Jackson College handbook lists concrete actions: “Educate yourself and others, understand sexual violence, understand and practice consent, be a role model for respect through language and behavior, intervene as a concerned bystander.” You don’t need to be activists. You need to be present.

The difference between a culture that produces violence and one that prevents it lies in these small everyday gestures. In saying “are you up for this?” instead of assuming. In stopping when the other person freezes. In accepting that consent can be withdrawn even midway. Even if it’s convenient to think otherwise.

Sources and references

Sources:

Consent Culture Conference 2026 – Peel District School Board

Consent: Our Role in the Interruption of Rape Culture – The Oberlin Review

Creating a Culture of Consent – Jackson College (pdf)

Kinsey Institute – Consent and Sexuality

AASECT – American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists
