Bondage is the practice of immobilizing or restricting a person's body movement using ropes, straps, handcuffs, harnesses, or other tools. It is part of the “B/D” component of BDSM, but it has its own independent culture with specific techniques, aesthetics, and communities.
Techniques and materials
Japanese rope bondage, called shibari or kinbaku, is probably the most aesthetically recognizable form. It uses jute or cotton rope in geometric patterns that distribute pressure across the whole body. It takes years of practice to do safely, and it has developed an entire community of riggers (those who tie) and bunnies (those who are tied) with events, workshops, and a very serious technical tradition.
Western bondage is more pragmatic: leather or metal handcuffs, bondage tape, synthetic ropes. Less aesthetic than shibari but more accessible for beginners. Then there are bondage tapes, body harnesses, bed restraints. The material changes the experience significantly.
Safety
Safety in bondage is non-negotiable. Three basic rules: never leave a tied-up person alone, keep scissors within reach for emergencies, regularly check circulation in the extremities. Wrist ties can compress nerves within minutes if done incorrectly. Neck bondage is one of the few practices that experienced practitioners almost universally discourage.
The safe word and nonverbal signals (for those with their mouth occupied) must always be agreed on beforehand, not during.
The psychological dimension
For many people, bondage isn't just physical. Immobilization creates a particular mental state: you stop controlling, you surrender responsibility for your body to someone else. Many practitioners describe a form of deep relaxation during passive bondage sessions. This response is well-documented enough to have a name: “subspace”.
For the rigger, the concentration required by the technique often has a meditative component. It's one of the few aspects of BDSM where the “active” role is also the one that requires the most constant mental presence.
