Digital relationships, understood as romantic or erotic relationships that develop and are maintained primarily through digital channels, are no longer a rarity. They have become an ordinary form of human connection, with their own characteristics that don't necessarily make them inferior to face-to-face relationships.

How they work

Digital relationships develop through chats, video calls, messages, and shared content. Communication is often more frequent and more intense than would be possible in real life: no physical distance limits the conversation.

The absence of physical contact doesn't eliminate emotional intimacy. Many people describe digital relationships as some of the most honest they've ever had, precisely because distance reduces certain social defenses and allows for more direct communication.

Specific limitations

Digital relationships have concrete difficulties. Meeting in person, when it happens, can be disappointing because the real person doesn't match the image built up over time. Geographical distance creates practical asymmetries that are hard to manage. Dependence on digital channels makes relationships vulnerable to technical problems, platform changes, and unilateral decisions to disappear.

Ghosting is easier in digital settings because the social consequences are reduced. This lowers the cost of behaviors that would be almost impossible in real-life relationships.
